Boys and Men UK – Supporting Recovery in Colchester

Earlier this month, Sally from Essex Recovery Foundation and Bethany from the Community Research Team made a trip to Colchester to visit Boys and Men UK CIC, one of the projects awarded funding through the first round of the Essex Recovery Fund.

They met with Salim, the organisation’s founder, to hear more about the work taking place and to explore how we might work together in future to support the recovery community.

Boys and Men UK CIC exists to support boys and men to build confidence, develop their skills, and feel part of something. Their programmes span everything from physical activities like football, hiking and boxing, to one-to-one support with employment, education, and digital skills. Young people can get involved in workshops, creative sessions, or just spend time in a space where they feel accepted. For older men, there are opportunities to meet others, build social connections, and take steps towards employment or further training.

At its heart, the project is about changing the narrative around masculinity. Salim and the team are creating a space where boys and men can talk openly, challenge stereotypes, and think about the impact they want to have on the world around them. They’re also looking at how we can create a more connected and accountable community – something that runs through all aspects of their work.

Thanks to the Essex Recovery Fund, we’re proud to be supporting projects like this – ones that are rooted in community, shaped by experience, and committed to making real, long-term change.

We’re looking forward to continuing conversations with Boys and Men UK CIC, and seeing how we can support their work and connect more people across Essex to meaningful recovery opportunities.
